"I love you too, Spike."
"'S what they all say, luv, but sooner or later I get left behind."
"Not by me, okay? I've never had anyone look at me the way you do; look out for me the way you do. If you think I'd ever walk away from something as special as this you're crazy. I'll never leave you."
Spike pondered. Xander may never want to leave, but life had a way of playing dirty tricks, and death was only ever a heartbeat away.
The search for a solution to the problem of the chip began in earnest.
Xander plodded, exhausted, into the kitchen. Unexpected arms wrapped tight around his chest, pulling him back against a strong, lean body.
"You look knackered, luv. Rough day?"
"Spike! I thought you'd gone, left, or... or got dusted and nobody told me. Where the hell have you been, you bastard? It's been three months!"
"Had something important to take care of, Xan. But I'm back now, and I'll never leave you again. Still love me?"
"Of course I do, Spike."
"I love you."
"Yes, forever. Now, what...?"
Spike bit, drew deep, then lifted his wrist.
"Drink of me."
He'd talked about the claiming bond with Xander several times, which was probably why his lover didn't struggle when the fangs sank in. The eagerness with which the boy had bitten into his wrist has proved to Spike how much he was truly wanted.
When Xander finally realised that Spike didn't intend to stop, he was shaky on his feet and couldn't fight it. Instead he clamped down tighter on the flesh between his teeth, and siphoned off great gouts of vampire blood.
Spike was curious to see if the remaining hyena traits would survive the emergence of Xander's demon.
"There are only three of them. You can take them, I'll just... watch."
After one last lingering kiss, Xander prowled forward, attracting the attention of the trio of gang members standing over the bodies of their fallen comrades.
"Betcha wonderin' what happened to your little playmates, huh? Well let me tell you. They saw my mate fucking me against the wall back there and they got pissy about it. But Spike took care of them, and now I get to take care of you. So, who's first?"
"Don't play too long, Xan, or we'll have to start all over again..."
